USE OF ORIENTAL RUGS

Sizes
For a room size carpet we suggest that you select a carpet approximately 1 1/2 foot smaller on each side. If a room is 12 x 16 ft a 9 x 12 ft carpet will be fine. If you have a very much larger room you may leave even 2 to 2 1/2 ft off of each side.
Mats
Several types of mats are available on the market. For Orientals over wood or stone floors we now recommend a grided rubber mat (so called no-skid). They stay flexible for about four years giving protection against hammering of heels. They come in 3/16" and 3/8" thickness. In most applications the 3/16" is sufficient. If you cannot find it in your market you may order it cut to size from us. Please call (212) 888-1111. We are not using the jute (horse hair type) mats as they are painted and the paint attaches itself to the carpet. We generally prefer thinner mats. In addition the jute powders due to age. We do not recommend using oriental rugs over wall to wall carpet. The rugs walk and crumble and there is no acceptable mat to go in between.
Fringes
Most carpets lose their fringes with use over time. Usually when the fringe is worn out the ends of the carpet must be bound by hand. This will prevent the ends from unraveling and the ultimate loss of the border. Some people have a new fringe strip sewn to the carpet, but this not what we are recommending in most cases.

About Us

We are dealers in antiques and rugs for nearly 70 years. The Anavian family has been in the business of dealing in eastern arts, including antiques, rugs, jewelry, and archeological treasures for many generations. We wrote the book Royal Persian Kashmir Brocades (1975), and the catalogue of the Asian Museum & Yasushi Inoue Memorial Pavilion Collections (1998). New York University’s professor George Anavian has taught the appraisal course in oriental rugs for 15 years. He is qualified to help you to acquire valuable additions to your collection or for your personal use. He can also offer comprehensive and honest information to all of your inquiries regarding any product, appraisals, conservation, or selling. As a child he apprenticed with his father Rahim Anavian, who has dealt in antiquities, carpets and textiles since 1922. Both Mr. Anavians have wide ranging expertise in many fields of antiques. They have sold to many museums and collections around the world, and have a long time experience with auction houses. If you have any questions or you need any additions to this site, please contact:
